What's the Ideal Bedding for Your Sleep Type?

What's the Ideal Bedding for Your Sleep Type?

Not everyone sleeps the same way, so it doesn't make sense for everyone to use the same bedding. Some people wake up sweating in the middle of the night, some always sleep with cold feet, and some change position a hundred times before finally falling asleep. If you're still choosing your sheets by colour alone, you're missing out on half of what your bed can offer.

1. Identify your sleep type

Before choosing fabrics, it's worth understanding how you sleep. Most people fit into one of these four profiles.

Hot sleeper: Wakes up sweating often, prefers to sleep with little clothing and kicks off the blanket in the middle of the night even in winter. Needs breathable fabrics that help control heat.

Cold sleeper: Always has cold feet and hands, likes to wrap up in several layers and never feels the bed is warm enough. Needs fabrics that retain warmth without weighing you down.

Light sleeper: Wakes at the slightest sound, changes position several times a night and is sensitive to rough textures or uncomfortable labels. Needs soft fabrics, free of seams that irritate, that don't rustle when you move.

Restless sleeper: Moves around a lot during the night, sometimes waking up with the sheets completely out of place. Needs sturdy fabrics that grip the mattress well and don't wrinkle or shift easily.

It's not unusual to recognise yourself in more than one profile, and that's fine. What matters is knowing what to look for when choosing.

2. Match the fabric to your needs

Each of our fabrics has its own characteristics that make more or less sense depending on your sleep type.

Bamboo: Soft to the touch, with good moisture absorption. Hypoallergenic, suitable for sensitive skin, and helps regulate temperature, making it ideal for hot sleepers.

Linen: Naturally breathable structure that lets air through and helps dissipate heat. A good choice for hot sleepers and for anyone looking for a durable fabric that lasts.

Cotton: Versatile fabric that balances warmth and freshness well. A good starting point for light sleepers, being soft and free of rough textures.

Egyptian Cotton™: Long-staple cotton, finer and softer than conventional cotton, always with a refined finish. The fabric's structure matters too. In percale (400-thread-count Percale), the touch is drier and more breathable, which helps with hot sleepers. In satin (430-thread-count Satin), the finish is denser and smoother, retains warmth closer to the body and suits cold sleepers. Thanks to its softness, it's always a good choice for light sleepers.

Cotton-Silk: A blend combining the lightness of cotton with the smooth touch of silk. Glides easily over the skin and reduces friction during the night, which also benefits your hair. A good choice for light sleepers.

Silk: Fabric with a smooth touch and natural temperature regulation, suitable for both hot and cold sleepers. Reduces friction during the night and is known for its benefits to skin and hair.

Hemp: A more resistant fabric with a firm structure that holds its shape well throughout the night. A good choice for restless sleepers, as it doesn't shift easily, and for anyone looking for freshness, being a breathable fibre.

3. Practical choosing guide

To simplify the decision, here's a quick summary based on your sleep type.

Hot sleeper: go for bamboo, linen, silk or 400-thread-count Percale.

Cold sleeper: choose 430-thread-count Satin or silk, and layer up the bed with a throw or a blanket.

Light sleeper: prefer cotton-silk, Egyptian Cotton™ or cotton.

Restless sleeper: opt for hemp, for its resistance and good grip on the mattress.

Choosing well isn't just about immediate comfort. It's also a matter of health.

Sleeping well starts with understanding what your body really needs, and then choosing the fabric that meets that need.
